Aachen City Hall stands on the foundations of Charlemagne's Royal Hall. The largest special exhibition by area is held in the City Hall's Coronation Hall. It invites visitors to explore and experience courtly life during the Carolingian era, showcases the king and military leader traveling from palace to palace, outlines the material foundations of his rule using archaeological and art-historical evidence, and provides insight into the external models that motivated him to establish a "place of power" in Aachen.
